__________________________

Hello, everyone! We're starting a new journal for contest news now that the entry period has finished. We've received a few questions, and we're sure we'll get more, so here's the place to find answers!

1) When will we find out who won? Winners will be announced in an awards ceremony at con! The ceremony time is still TBD, and may occur after the books go on sale Friday. If that is the case, well, the surprise will be when you pick up your book! We will try to login over the weekend to post the winners after the ceremony.

2) When will the books be on sale? Friday at 2pm in Artist Alley. These books are limited, so don't delay in stopping by to pick them up!

3) Are you doing online orders? </a> Sorry, Fanime is not set up to take online orders for this project at this time.

4) What if I won but I can't attend the con? We will arrange to ship your prize to you. :)

5) If I don't know if I've won, how will I know whether I need to buy a copy of the book or not? Winners will be contacted before con to arrange the ceremony and prize delivery. However, if you are not contacted before con, this does not mean you weren't selected for an honorable mention! Honorable mentions get printed in a gallery in the book, and will be named in the ceremony but do not receive a prize.

I have uploaded the entries to a photobucket page for easy viewing. If you do not see your entry, please contact us right away! Note that there are THREE PAGES of entries! View them here. Original estimates put us over 50 entries, but it looks more like just over 40. Thanks again, everyone, for participating! Turnout was great and we're truly touched!

Do you love Fanime? Do you want to be part of the most kick-butt anime con in NorCal? Consider joining our staff or becoming a volunteer at con! Fanime is in need of enthusiastic fans to help us put on a great show!

Special Notes for Staff Positions

First, all staff positions require either a large time commitment before the convention, or a large time commitment during the convention, or both. You should review each description carefully to see what they ask.

Also, all staff members must be at least 16 years old.

Separately, some departments require only 18+ or 21+ staffers. Please check the details accordingly.

If you aren't sure if you can make a full commitment to a staff position, consider being a volunteer for FanimeCon.

And no, staff members are not paid. The spiffy "Staff" badge, the staff room rate, and the satisfaction of a job well done are the main rewards for all staffers.

We need help with ConOps, Rovers, Print, Info Desk, Game Show, Stage Zero and more! Please check out our recruitment page to see what positions might work for you! Sorry, we're not looking for any art or design staff at the moment, but we need help in other areas so check it out! :)

:new: The contest is now closed. We received just over 50 entries! Wow, thanks everyone! Talk about a last minute wave, hehe. If you don't see your entry listed, that doesn't mean we didn't get it. Send us a note with a link to your entry if you'd like it posted. However, if you didn't receive an e-mail confirmation from Usaku, please note us! You MUST submit the form with your entry to art@fanime.com, not in DA notes. Even if you sent us a note and we have replied, your entry must go to art@fanime.com to qualify. We want to make sure we have all the entries - to properly keep them organized, I need them all in one e-mail account with the appropriate publishing and legal information. If you have not received an e-mail confirmation, please e-mail or note us right away!

And now.. it is late and this staffer must sleep, for there is a Fanime meeting tomorrow! (PS. If you're interested in staffing for Fanime in general, not for art, come join us at the Hilton Santa Clara Room, 2nd floor! We need lots of help running our fun events, so please stop by!)

Major Update!

Hello, everyone! Firstly, I want to thank everyone who has expressed interest here and contributed their thoughtfulness and suggestions! In the interests in staying true to our motto, "By Fans, For Fans," we feel we should create more of a doujinshi-style artbook that includes not only Fanime artwork archives and comics, but fan art as well!

By creating a doujinshi-style book, we are able to keep costs low so that more fans can purchase copies at a reasonable price. Finances are tight for everyone, including Fanime, which is why we want to make sure we don't pass astronomical printing prices onto our fans!  Additionally, we feel that a nice paperback book would feel more home-grown, as is Fanime itself. We know a hardback pretty would be delicious, and certainly our fans are worth it! However, we decided that being able to shave $15 from the cover price would make an important difference!

We got budget approved and now we're ready to make this thing happen!

Details
So here are the new details on the book! Please disregard the old information.

Content
Chronicles the artwork produced by Fanime's Artist Pool over the last 5 years! We're hoping to include to short manga chapters from two of our staff artists as well as a sketch/work in progress gallery. But, we also decided thanks to the input of many fans, that it wouldn't be a proper Fanime book if we didn't have fan contributions! See below for information on the contest.

Size/Specs
A4, 8.264inx11.694in. Paperback, perfect-bound with a full color cover and full color interior pages (except manga in black and white). Page Count TBD, at least 68 pages.

Cost
$20 (subject to change, but not likely to). Copies must be purchased at con and will be for sale at the merchandise booth in the dealer's room.

Editions are limited! The first pressing will only run 250 copies. It is not yet known whether Fanime will pursue a second run as we are doing this as a special celebration of our 15th year. If they are snapped up quickly, we may consider printing more. If not, we will continue to sell them until they are gone and that will be it.

About the Contest

By popular demand, we will hold a fanart contest! However, it will be slightly unconventional. There will not be a traditional ranking of 1st, 2nd, 3rd. There will be three winners in the following categories: Artist Pool Favorite, Staff Favorite and Fan Favorite! Each of the three winning pieces will be printed on a full page and the artist will receive one free copy of the artbook, signed by the artist staff (and maybe even sketched in, if you ask nicely!). There will also be a gallery of runners up that will be printed in the book in much smaller spaces, similar to fanart sections of magazines. Unfortunately, the runners up will not be elligible to receive free copies of the book, but will be able to be recognized for their hardwork by being printed and seen by hundreds of fans!

Fans will have until Friday, April 3rd, 2009 to submit their pieces! That's just under one month, folks. It may seem soon, but we need to get the selection process underway so we can get the book to print in April.

Rules/Details
1) Deadline: 11:59PM, Pacific Time, April 3rd, 2009. NO ENTRIES SUBMITTED AFTER THIS DATE WILL BE ACCEPTED.

2) Content: Your fanart must be an illustration or drawing featuring at least one of Fanime's five mascots: Amber, Becky, Candy, Damien and/or Elliot. References will be posted on Fanimecon.deviantart.com (links to come soon). Sorry, no photography or writing allowed; this is strictly an illustration-based project.

3)The characters can be featured in any theme from the last five years (Urban/College Students, Cyberpunk Gothic & Lolita, Space Odyssey, Feudal Japan or Music/J-rock) OR you may come up with any situation or theme of your choice, within good reason.

4)Absolutely NO hentai, yaoi or yuri! Anything of an exaggerated sexual nature will be declined. We have a wide range of attendee ages in our audience of which we have to be considerate. Romantic situations are welcome, of any gender pairing, but please keep it PG. (For the record, Amber/Damien and Candy/Elliot are considered "canon" in the Fanime universe.. aka the artist pool's brains, LOL.)

5) Media: Any media, traditional or digital, color or black and white, is accepted, so long as the file you submit meets our requirements.

6) File Submission:
- You MUST submit a CMYK digital file or scan of 300 dpi or higher
- File size should be 8.514in x 11.944in. This is bigger than the book size to allow for trimming during the printing process.
- Vertical orientation preferred but not required. If you have a neat idea for a landscape, square or oval design, go for it, but make sure your piece is at least 8.514in wide.
- All art should be sent to art@fanime.com. Please avoid sending attachments larger than 5MB! We may not receive them! Use a free file hosting service such as YouSendIt.com or MegaUpload, and send us a link.

7) Info to be published with your artwork if it wins:
Title of the Piece: (Optional)
Name you would like published: (Required!)
Age: (Optional)
Location: (Optional)
Website or DeviantArt URL: (Optional)

8) Info we need for legal and logistical purposes (will NOT be shared with anyone!)
Your Legal Name:
Your Age:
Your Address:
Your Contact Number:
Your Contact E-mail:

9) Agreement: By submitting your work you certify the following:
- Fanime has permission to reprint your work as part of the "Fanime 15th Anniversary Artbook" without compensation other than outlined in the prizes section.
- Artwork becomes property of FanimeCon, as all characters are copyright FanimeCon, however FanimeCon will NOT use your artwork in any profitable projects outside this artbook. As artists ourselves, we respect artists rights.
- You are over the age of 18 OR you have received parental permission to participate.
- The artwork is 100% your creation! Copying or tracing is prohibited. All members of the artist team are active on DeviantArt. We all love anime genre's across the gamut. Don't think we won't know.
- You are not and never have been part of the FanimeCon artist staff.

10) Winners for each category will be chosen by vote. Artist Pool will vote on their favorite, Staff Pick votes will be held at a staff meeting. Depending on the number of entries, the Fan Favorite category will be isolated into 10-20 finalists on which fans can vote. Final voting will be held via poll on the official Fanime forum.

San Jose, California's FanimeCon, a convention celebrating anime, manga, asian film, music and more, is celebrating their 15th year by releasing a collection of artwork created for the convention over the last several years. Hello, everyone! Sorry things have been so quiet here.. we're hoping to remedy that! So, what's new in Fanime? Our website! The new website layout for 2009 has been posted! It features the beautiful artwork of Wen-M reflecting this year's theme, music! This year the Fanime mascots have found themselves rockin' the world. Damien, Amber, Becky and Elliot have formed a band while Amber has chosen to pursue a solo career. Join us for a year that promises to be music to fans' ears!

Something important to note is reserving yourself a hotel room. Fanime's two hotels book very quickly! This year we have added the Crown Plaza hotel, across from the Hilton, as well. Visit our hotel website to learn more about hotel registration and how you can get special rates!

The other thing you want to make sure to do is pre-register. Don't wait until the last minute! Pre-registering is cheaper and easier than waiting until the con. Save some money, save the hassle and pick up your badge the night before the con. Plus, you get a spiffy backstage-pass-style laminated badge featuring random collectible art by one of our staff artists.

Our guests have yet to be announced, but they'll be worth the wait! We look forward to seeing you!

Hello, Fanime fans! FanimeCon 2009 will mark the 15th anniversary of the convention! To celebrate, we'd like to release a commemorative artbook for the fans. It would be a limited edition, hard-back book with a dust jacket. The contents will include a collection of illustrations from the previous 5 years of Fanime as well as character and artist profiles and maybe even a short comic!

Artists from the last 5 years, such as Wen-M, porku, HoiHoiSan, gem2niki, poorjack, Neolucky, zambicandy and more will have their gorgeous contributions to the Fanime art collection featured in the book along with artist and mascot character profiles.

However, the Fanime staff would like to be sure there is interest in the project before they invest in it. This is where we here at the artist pool ask you to head over to the Fanime forums and post your support or feedback regarding the project:

forums.fanime.com/index.php/to…

Thank you to everyone who attended this year's event! It was our best year so far, by leaps and bounds. Many great times we had and memories made. 2009 promises to be another exciting year, so we look forward to seeing you there! Don't forget to pre-register for the best deal (and the really spiffy laminated badge!).

Mini-FAQ
What is FanimeCon?
FanimeCon is Northern California's largest anime convention. We specialize in a wide array of programming over a four-day Memorial Weekend. We also run MusicFest, dedicated to live concerts that have included awesome artists such as ZZ (One Piece, Eyeshield21) and Mari Ijima (Macross). Fanime was founded in 1994 as a small gathering for NorCal anime clubs and has since grown to over 10,000 attendees!

How do I join the club?
Simple! Just add us to your friends/watch list. You don't have to keep our icon in your journal, but it would be great if you did! The more we get the word out, the more fun the con will be.
